Fahid Ben Khalfallah insists Melbourne Victory will catch up with Sydney FC to attain glory in the A-League

Fiery Football

Fahid Ben Khalfallah insists that Melbourne Victory are aiming for success on all fronts this season, after a superb performance by him saw Kevin Muscat’s men rampage to a 4-1 victory over the Central Coast Mariners.

This was reminiscent of the 2014-15 season when he first arrived at the club from French club Troyes AC. During that season, the Melbourne boys managed to do the double by winning the Premiership and being crowned champions. The former Bordeaux player also won the Victory medal that season, and was named in the A-League PFA Team of the Season 2014-15.

“The first year we won so that’s my goal for this year,” Ben Khalfallah told Fox Sports.

“At this club we just want to win. I know I’m going to play maybe two more years or one more year and I want to enjoy it.”

However, Muscat’s men have their job cut out if their are to oust Sydney FC at the top of the table. The New South Wales club have managed to go on a record breaking start to the season, and are now unbeaten in their first 12 games with nine wins. This puts them seven points clear of second placed Victory, who have a game in hand.

He continued: “We have to give [Sydney FC] a lot of credit. Their performances are outstanding.

“Since [beating] Western Sydney at home we have been playing really good football, scoring a lot of goals. We just have to think about our performance and we will see at the end of the season.”

The game against the Mariners took place on a hot and humid Wednesday night that saw the teams taking regular drink breaks to remain hydrated. Meanwhile, the Tunisian put in a top performance as he was involved in three of the four goals that his side scored.

But at the ripe age of 34-years-old, the attacker admits that he is on the twilight of his career and is hoping for as much silverware as possible before the curtains fall.

“But I’m getting older now so it’s tough,” Ben Khalfallah said.

“We played very well. To score four goals is never easy and in the end we controlled the game. “I’m very happy about the performance tonight.”

Victory will take on Newcastle Jets on January 2, 2017 at the Simonds Stadium in Geelong.
