Nigel Boogaard: APL consortium takeover ‘a big boost’ for Newcastle Jets

Newcastle Jets skipper Nigel Boogaard has revealed that the takeover from the APL consortium is “a big boost” for the players.

The club has been embroiled in a difficult battle to stay alive as absentee owner Martin Lee has unsurprisingly been stripped of A-League and W-League licences.

But a consortium led by Sydney FC, Western United and Western Sydney Wanderers managed to give the troubled outfit a new lease of life as Football Australia will hand the group new licences to participate in the A-League and W-League respectively.

The 34-year-old captain admitted that the ownership saga coupled with an uncertain future caused issues in the dressing room, but is now looking forward to better times ahead.

“The news today is a big boost for the players and for the rest of the club,” Boogaard said, according to the club’s official website.

“While the players have remained focused on performing, the ownership discussions have been a distraction and I’m glad that we can all now look forward to this Friday’s game and beyond, knowing that the club is now on a strong footing.”

Newcastle Jets will play Western Sydney Wanderers at the Newcastle International Sports Centre on Friday.
