Brisbane Roar 0-2 Macarthur FC: Denis Genreau & Matt Derbyshire win it for the Bulls

Goals from Denis Genreau and Matt Derbyshire in the second-half were enough for Macarthur FC to take three points on the road as Brisbane Roar succumbed to a defeat in their own backyard.

The Bulls showed early intent but the hosts defended well as the first period of play was predominantly fought in the middle of the pitch with neither side doing enough to create much in way of chances. Whenever one side moved into the defensive third of the other, the back line came out on top on a warm evening in Redcliffe.

Seventy six minutes went by before the first goal of the game came along as Macarthur took the lead to make it 1-0. Midfielder Jake Hollman twisted and turned to Jack Hingert to the left of goal, and could have even had a penalty as he was clipped and fell down in the area. But the youngster played football the way it is meant to be played, by quickly picking himself up to beat the defender and picked out Genreau in the six-yard-box. The young former Melbourne City midfielder took it on the volley to finish the poacher’s goal with aplomb.

The Roar tried to push forward and pushed hard to find a leveller, and it went as far as goalkeeper Jamie Young going all the way to the halfway line as the end of normal time approached. On one such occasion, the Bulls broke down the attack and quickly broke as veteran Derbyshire noticed the ‘keeper off his line and lobbed the ball over the shot-stopper and into the back of the net to make it 2-0 and guarantee victory for his side.

Brisbane Roar will take on Newcastle Jets in Redcliffe on Sunday, while Macarthur host Adelaide United in Campbelltown looking for their first home win of the season.
