Melbourne Victory ‘need to perform now’ – Callum McManaman

Callum McManaman has conceded that Melbourne Victory need to start putting in strong performances to turn their season around, ahead of the upcoming game against Newcastle Jets.

The men in blue have had a tough start to their A-League campaign, winning only one of their first six games. A recent run of woeful results including a 5-2 defeat to Brisbane Roar sees the club languishing at the bottom of the standings.

In contrast, their opponents on Sunday are undergoing a resurgent period following the ownership drama coming to a temporary conclusion, and have put in strong performances to go on an unbeaten run of four games.

Given the Victory fanbase and the expectation around the club every season, it is no surprise that there is a significant amount of pressure on the players to deliver results to appease their supporters.

“Our fans expect us to win and that’s what we want, that’s what we need and that’s what we thrive off,” said McManaman, according to the club’s official website.

“I’ve been at clubs like Sunderland where there’s 40,000 fans there every week. They expect to win every game as well so that’s the expectation the players have to deal with.

“We need to perform now and we need to start getting points on the table for the fans.”

McManaman recently regained full fitness following an injury and is expected to make a return for Victory when they take on Newcastle Jets at the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium on Sunday.
