Keanu Baccus: It will be ‘a great honour’ to beat Sydney FC

Western Sydney Wanderers midfielder Keanu Baccus insists that the significance of the upcoming derby day clash against Sydney FC is not lost on his teammates.

The Parramatta outfit come into the blockbuster derby having registered their first win of the season with a 2-1 result against Newcastle Jets. Their arch-rivals in the meantime began their season the way they finished their last campaign, with a solid 2-1 win over Wellington Phoenix in Wollongong.

Recent history between the two clubs sits firmly in favour of Carl Robinson’s men, as they have not lost to their cross-town rivals since 2018.

“All the Sydney teams want to beat each other and it’ll be a great honour to win so early in the season,” said Baccus, according to the club’s official website.

“Sydney FC have been a good team over the last couple of years and last year we got the better of them. If we can do the same this season that would be great.”

The 22-year-old also believes that while the gravity of the occasion is not lost on the players, the attitude towards the clash will be a professional one.

Baccus added: “I think it’s always a big game a Derby, especially against Sydney, and we’re going to grow in every part of the game.

“A Derby is always a bit more special but we want to treat every game similar and win every game this season.”

The Wanderers lock horns with Sydney FC at Stadium Australia on Saturday.
