Kosta Barbarouses insists that he backs himself to score goals in every game he plays in, having recently overcome a goal drought to bag a brace in a 2-1 win for Sydney FC over Wellington Phoenix.
The Kiwi hitman had scored from the penalty spot against Western Sydney Wanderers earlier in the season, but had not scored in open play since January last year. This in turn led to several questions being asked concerning his form, and whether the 30-year-old would continue to be backed by manager Steve Corica.
But the fleet-footed forward returned to goalscoring ways by hitting the net twice against Wellington Phoenix, where both well taken shots were complemented with equally good runs into space.
“I always want to score every game that I can to help the team but it hasn’t been falling for me,” Barbarouses told FOX Sports.
“I always work hard every day at training. You make your own luck and I knew it was always going to turn around.”
Barbarouses is no stranger to drought-ridden patches as went 15 matches in all competitions in 2014-15 before scoring in consecutive games for Melbourne Victory as they went on to top the A-League that season.
The experienced forward added: “I’ve gone through patches before, 15 games before and ended up scoring five or six in a row and gone on to win the Championship.
“So you’ve always got to back yourself. Maybe for a young player it’s a lot to deal with. I’ve been around for a little bit and I know how to deal with it – just work hard every day.
“I always back myself.”
