Western Sydney Wanderers midfielder James Troisi believes that the referee made a mistake when he awarded Sydney FC a penalty in the recent encounter between the two sides that ended in a 1-1 draw at Stadium Australia.
The former Melbourne Victory man was involved in goals scored for both sides as he first conceded a penalty a little after the hour mark, which Kosta Barbarouses did well to put away. The 32-year-old ended up getting on the scoresheet a few minutes later after a goalkeeping error from Andrew Redmayne saw him slot home the equaliser.
Questions were raised as to whether the decision to award a penalty was the right one, as Milos Ninkovic appeared to run into the experienced midfielder.
On the one hand, it could be said that the Serbian was looking to win a spot kick as he ran into Troisi. But on the other, replays showed that the Wanderers’ midfielder had moved slightly into the path of the oncoming Sky Blues player.
“What else am I meant to do?” he told FOX Sports after the game. “In all fairness he’s looked for it and well within his rights to do that. I think it’s the wrong decision.”
The 1-1 draw saw Western Sydney extend their unbeaten run against Sydney FC to five consecutive games.
