The game between Melbourne Victory and Wellington Phoenix that was previously set to take place on Wednesday night at the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium has been postponed by a week, and is now set to take place on Wednesday, February 24.
The hosts have had a dreary start to their A-League campaign, winning only one of their last six outings that leaves them at the bottom of the standings. To make matters worse, scoring only five goals this season means that every other club has found the back of the net more times than Grant Brebner’s men.
Yet Wellington have not fared much better, as their one win in five games puts them in 11th place. So this fixture would have been seen as a must win for both sides as they look to recover their respective campaigns.
However, recent announcements by the Victorian government has seen a five day lockdown being imposed, causing the upcoming match to be postponed by a week.
A statement on Victory’s official website reads: “Due to the five day lockdown in Victoria which commenced last night, our match against Wellington Phoenix, scheduled for Wednesday 17 February, has been postponed until Wednesday 24 February at AAMI Park, with kick off at 7:05pm.
“Please note this is subject to change if there are any further directives from the Victorian Government.”
The postponement of the fixture against Wellington is likely to give midfielders Callum McManaman and Marco Rojas a little more time as they recover from their respective injuries.
